During the regular season, the Hilltoppers record was 12-2. The Toppers played five games in the District tournament. Science Hill defeated Lamar, Happy Valley, and Greeneville by large scores. In two hard fought games, Science Hill topped Training School 3-0 and 6-3. This gave the Toppers the District Title.
In regional action, Lonnie Lowe pitched a gem as the Hilltoppers defeated Knox Fulton 11-4. In the second round of the Regionals, the Hilltoppers defeated Kingsport as Steve Spurrier doubled down the right field line and scored Tony Bowman and the Hilltoppers qualified for the State Tournament (the was the 3rd straight year Science Hill had qualified).
In game one of the State Tournament, Lonnie Lowe held Charlotte to three singles and his teammates hammered out a 13-2 win. Science Hill then advanced to the finale by defeating Memphis Messick 4-1 as Steve Spurrier was the winning pitcher.
In the finals, Memphis Messick again was the victim. Steve Spurrier singled in Tom Hager for the only run of the game. Lonnie Lowe fired a two hitter. Memphis' Sayle tripled in the seventh, but was cut down at the plate when Joe Cowell relayed Al Ferguson's throw home in time for Choo Tipton to nail the runner and nip the Memphis threat. Thus the Hilltoppers became the 1962 Tennessee State Champions!
