ASSISTANT COACH: ANDY WALLEN

Coach Andy Wallen began his baseball coaching career at Science Hill as an assistant to Bob Dempsey in 1997. He then worked as an assistant under Bernie Young for the next six seasons from 1998 to 2003. Coach Wallen was the head coach of the varsity program for two years in 2004 and 2005. He also served as a part of Bill McKinney’s staff in 2007. Since 2010, Coach Wallen has worked as a varsity program assistant under Ryan Edwards. In total, Coach Wallen has spent time at all levels of the Science Hill baseball program for 21 seasons.
He played high school baseball under Mike Cline at Sullivan South High School and as a senior was an All-Conference selection from the 1990 team that captured a conference, district, and regional title. He earned a bachelor’s degree from East Tennessee State University in 1995 and a master’s degree from Lincoln Memorial University in 2002. He later added a gifted education endorsement from Vanderbilt University in 2009. Coach Wallen was nominated by the teaching staff at Liberty Bell Middle School as a Building Level 2013-2014 Teacher of the Year candidate.
Coach Wallen is married to Krystall Wallen. She graduated from Daniel Boone High School and Milligan College where she was a two sport athlete in softball and basketball. She began her teaching career at Sullivan South High School and coached both sports for a total of fourteen years. Krystall continues to teach at Sullivan South today. In 2017, she was honored as Sullivan County Teacher of the Year and inducted into the Daniel Boone Sports Hall of Fame. Both Coach Wallen and his wife are presently working in their 26th year in education.

ASSISTANT COACH: TIM VANTHOURNOUT

Coach Tim Vanthournout began his baseball coaching career at Science Hill as a student assistant to Bill McKinney in 2006. While working with the junior varsity the role for Coach Vanthournout continued to evolve and Head Coach Ryan Edwards made Coach Vanthournout the junior varsity pitching coach in 2008. In 2010 Coach Vanthournout was promoted to varsity pitching coach. In 2011 Coach Vanthournout completed his schooling and accepted a teaching and coaching job at Elizabethton High School. Coach Vanthournout was the special team’s coordinator and secondary coach at Elizabethton for 2010 and 2011 football seasons. He was the junior varsity baseball head coach in 2012. In the fall of 2012 Coach Vanthournout returned to Science Hill and has been an assistant coach since. Coach Vanthournout also served as the Freshman football head coach from 2012-2016.

Coach Vanthournout is married to Marti Vanthournout. She is an ETSU graduate where she earned a degree in General Management and works as Audit Coordinator at Blackburn,Childress & Steagall, PLC. They have one son (Wyatt-3) and a daughter (Lyla-1) who loves to watch the Toppers.

ASSISTANT COACH: COREY MOSER

Coach Corey Moser enters his second year coaching at Science Hill. He has had other various coaching duties including working with the Fulton High School baseball program in 2014 under Science Hill Alum Coach Ryan Gentry, and Head Coach at Sullivan North Middle School. He also coached multiple sports, including baseball and basketball, as the Physical Education Teacher at Surgoinsville Middle School.
Coach Moser played high school baseball under Coach John Rice at Karns High School. He then went on to play college baseball at Carson-Newman under Coach Tom Griffin. From Carson-Newman, he earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Physical Education K-12, and then furthered his education at East Tennessee State University by earning his Master's Degree in Elementary Education K-6. Coach Moser currently teaches 1st grade at Lakeridge Elementary School in the Johnson City Schools system.

JUNIOR VARSITY HEAD COACH: MIKE AUSTIN

Coach Mike Austin joined the Science Hill coaching staff during the 2019-2020 school year. Coach Austin began his coaching career at Vance Middle School in Bristol Tennessee (2001-2007). From 2008-2018 Coach Austin was part of the Tennessee High School baseball staff where he was the Head JV baseball coach and a Varsity assistant. Coach Austin has coached at various levels of baseball for close to twenty years. He played high school baseball for Tim Graham at Abingdon High School in Abingdon Virginia, as a senior he was an all-conference and all- state selection. He later went on and played for Coach Jerry Opp at Virginia Intermont College where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Art Education with a K-12 certification.
Coach Austin is Married to Dorothy Austin she is a UTC graduate where she received a business degree and Earned a Master’s degree in teaching from ETSU and is currently employed by the Bristol Tennessee City School system as a seventh grade math teacher at Vance Middle School. JUNIOR VARSITY ASSISTANT COACH: TYREE JEFFRIES

Coach Tyree Jeffries began his baseball coaching career at Science Hill as the head coach of 7th Grade Liberty Bell in 2014-2015. He then worked as a junior varsity assistant under Coach Edwards for 2 seasons. He now serves as the head coach for the junior varsity baseball team.
He played high school ball under Coach John Growe at Southside High School in Jackson, Tennessee. As a junior, he was a 1st Team All-District selection as part of the team that won the 2007 district and regional title. As a senior, he was 1st Team All-District, 1st Team All Region, and 2nd Team All-state from the team that captured the 2008 district title. In his 4 years at Southside High School, he was part of 2 state tournament teams. He earned his Associates Degree from Jackson State Community College as student-athlete, as part of the baseball team in the TJCCAA Conference. As a sophomore, he earned 2nd Team TJCCAA All- Conference. He then earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Human Exercise Science from Milligan College as a student-athlete, as part of the baseball team in the AAC Conference where he earned 1st Team AAC All-Conference as a junior and senior.
Coach Jeffries is currently in his 5th year of teaching at Towne Acres Elementary School. He plans to further is education by attending graduate school and also receive his doctorate degree.
